Sometimes I say, I’ve never met a hobby I didn’t like.

But then, I remember that one.  It’s a lot of work.  It takes practice.  And time.

I mean, I don’t even bake the cakes around here anymore.  (When your girls say, Can I bake my own birthday cake?  You say yes!)

Some occasions call for a little something special on the cake, though, and a professionally decorated cake isn’t always an option.

Fortunately, I’m a little handier with a hot glue gun than I am with a bag of icing.  And a glue gun is about all you need to make these CUTE DIY CAKE TOPPERS that you can use over and over again.

And did I mention they cost about .30 each to make?

Since they’re so cheap, I experimented a little.   Anyone planning a baby shower?

Supplies:

  • small wood cutouts from Michael’s
  • craft sticks
  • craft paint or spray paint
  • hot glue gun
  • artist pen or fine tip sharpie (or other embellishment)

Cute DIY Cake Topper in 3 steps:

  1. Paint cutouts and let dry.
  2. Write your message.
  3. Glue craft stick onto back.

If you don’t like the idea of hand writing your message, there are always good ol’ stickers! (We won’t talk about how long I spent looking at the sticker choices at Michael’s.)

They have them for every occasion.

And speaking of birthdays, if you’re looking for a really cool gift that the kiddos will like for longer than 5 minutes, here’s my suggestion.

My youngest two got these Boogie Boards for Christmas, and they have been such a big hit – not just my kiddos, but with everyone who sees them.  They are so handy!

Great for doodling, games, traveling, keeping hands busy during read aloud time or church, and even for school!

Get them HERE (the pink one) and HERE (the rainbow one with chunkier writing pencils) and another one HERE.

P.S.  Because I know you’re now craving cake… our favorite EASY way to make a delicious gluten-free cake is to use the recipe on the back of the Hershey’s cocoa container, substituting THIS GLUTEN-FREE FLOUR in place of regular all-purpose flour.  You will never buy boxed mix again!

P.S.S.  No professional cake-making experience required.  😉
